Furnished caves for the homeless

The life of a homeless person is not that pleasant and the circumstances of their life sometimes are abominable to see. Some homeless people are, for instance, living in a sewerage or in abandoned caves. Yet, the society often doesn’t give their full compassion and this is incompatible to the situation the homeless people are in to.

An opportunity

The Italian artist Biancoshock noticed these problems among the homeless based on a story from the capital city of Romania, in which 600+ people are living in sewerages. Due to such cruel situations, Biancoshock came up with a new project called ‘borderlife’. In this project he wants to help the homeless people by furnishing the abandoned caves in Milan and offering them some comfort. It’s the idea to create small, underground chambers which contain all different facilities. For example, he built a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen, all in the tiniest way.

So, why is it emerging?

The homeless are dependent of others most of time, and that’s what makes them vulnerable. It is not easy for a homeless person to step out of the circulation of trouble where they are jammed in. For that reason, they need the possibility to rely on the help of the common humanity.

The trends sharing economy and the open world explain why such initiatives like ‘borderlife’ from Biancoshock are emerging. We live in a world where we should be thriftier about the pieces we possess, since we are told that the world is gradually running out of important substances and materials. Besides, we also should open up and create new spaces for the people who don’t have that much. If we can change our current perception of the buildings we have, then we could create new spaces for a whole other goal. For instance in the way we can re-use the abandoned caves by building little chambers in it. In this way we can share the skills we have with another person who is needy; an artist who likes to design and therefore furnishes caves in Milan to help homeless people. This is a great opportunity for both groups.

Development

If the society keep up with sharing and implementing such cordiality into our lives, then it would be possible that it has an impact on the current values of the people. It can cause incremental changes in the individual lifestyle we have today, by changing it into a more society-based lifestyle. It might be a huge statement, but I think that this can lead us to the end of the individual era and slowly creating a new world in which the focus is on everybody, at the same time.

Durable energy for lasting consumers

Over the last few years, many companies have been in the news due to different kind of scandals. You can think of a revelation of money which is snatched away or CEO’s that delivered false documents, and so on. Many citizens have been complaining about the reliability of such companies, and after all, I absolutely think that they have got that right!

The essence

After criticism, distrust and anger, companies are willing to make a change. A beautiful example is located in the United States of America. The DOE (Department of Energy) organised a better-building-challenge for the first time this year. The DOE invented a real life TV programme in which two companies, Whole Foods Market and Hilton Worldwide, are giving each other criticism and new opportunities to save more energy. They swap during the shows and are searching for points of improvement. ‘May the best HVAC win’ is the slogan. (HVAC means: heating, ventilation, air-conditioning)

swap homepage

Whole Foods Market and Hilton Worldwide in the better-building-challenge

The motives behind the story

There are a few reasons for such a (real life) TV show like this. As I said earlier, the different scandals that are revealed during the years is one of them. However, there are more grounds and changing motives. According to citizens, they gradually discover that many stories, documents, people and companies are not telling the truth. Everything can be based on a lie, and that is a thing we know nowadays. Because of disclosures, we become needy of a world that shows more openness, in which we all can be transparent. The consumer can actually see what the companies are doing and in which way they are saving more energy.  Nevertheless, the companies are being judged by each other, what is tending to be a great example of being sincere and transparent.

A bigger context

If we date back to a few earlier and larger trends, we can relate to digitisation and the way technology taught us to think for ourselves. Due to these trends, people like you and me were discovering more and more information about companies, for instance. As a matter of fact, technology made sure that if there is something revealed, people will share this on social media with the consequence that everybody will know it sooner. As an individual we can look up everything we want, at any time, at any place. All this is making the authorities less powerful and what is even more important…less of a ruler!

Beneath you can see the first episode, where Hilton Worldwide visits Whole Foods:

How it sequels

Companies are no longer trying to only tell the people they are of good willingness. The next step is to really show everybody how it is done, when it is done, where it is done and more of such questions. True transparency is the future, a world where secrets can not be hidden. But…. where does our privacy go?

What do you think of this topic?

New in: Share-it! app

What is it?

The new app called ‘’share-it’’ is an app which is based on posting messages on social media. When you download this app, you should write simple messages about a company and post this on networks like Facebook, Twitter and so on.  People most likely write about a company where they´re satisfied about.  In this manner, most of the messages are advertising.  Every company is paying 25 share itcent for a small and simple message, in order that 20 cent is given to UNICEF.  The founders, named Gert Breman and Ferry Gerritsen, decided to involve UNICEF in this concept. UNICEF is taking part because of the meals they´re bringing to especially children in developing countries.  Every post about a company brings in 20 cent, which UNICEF uses to supply food to poor children.

Why is it cool?

This new app is absolutely a cool, new thing to start helping others. There are different trends nowadays which can relate to this app. Think of the term ´´sharing economy´´ which you all must have heard sometimes.  We often are too busy with ourselves and our own success, that we don´t got time to think about the people around us.  It is a pity that our world seems to be an individual one. That is the main reason why the sharing economy is approaching. Another trend is the ‘’social web’’. Many people are posting messages online, searching on the internet, working with companies in foreign countries, simply because our world developed this way. So how easy would it be if this trend is a new start of helping each other out? Just by posting a simple message, like most of us do all day, you can help someone else in a developing country. Isn’t that great?

´We often are too busy with ourselves and our own success, that we don´t got time to think about the people around us. ´

Besides, this whole new way of living is related to a bigger revolution which started way earlier. This sharing economy and social web terms are based on even bigger trends called globalization, togetherness and being inline.  Globalization started way back, when just the infrastructure like airplanes started to be a booming factor. The world seems to be smaller, but we all know this isn’t the truth. It is the network of internet, infrastructure, and social relations which relatively makes the world more compact. Also ´´togetherness´´ is a term which started a bit earlier. There´s a great integration in especially the internet, but the main factor is not only being together in small groups like family and friends, but also in a bigger area.

It is absolutely great that such an easy solution as posting some online messages can be used to feed other people in poor countries. In my opinion we all are going to post something, because being together seems to be more fun than being an individual!Togetherness Community 2-2

Rainbow chips by Doritos

What is it?

The It Gets Better project started back in 2010, but at September 17th they launched the Doritos Rainbow chips, in collaboration with the Doritos Company. The rainbow chips are invented because of the LGBT pride.  This group consist lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who want to get a voice. The main reason for producing this rainbow chips is give them social assistance. The different colors Doritos is using are related to the same colors from the LGBT pride. The chips is only available online for $10 and above all the whole output is going to the It Gets Better project.

packdownload

Why is it cool?

First of all, when you just look at your bag of (limited-edition) chips and you see these full-colored chips (crunchy, bright looking), you obviously feel happy. Besides the fun part of it, it also induces a deeper meaning.  Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have had a hard time fitting in.  The question is if they are completely accepted to the present society, or that there’s still work to do. Since the humanity is creating groups who are different from ‘’the rest’’, there has always been complaints. Many people have felt very alone, while were in a society together. However, times are changing, and the social web is good example of this.  Relationships between two woman and two men are finally getting normal, because the social media gave this item more and more attention. But also progressive countries inspire other countries who don’t have that loose boundaries.

There are more trends with a link to being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.  You can think of the struggling for being equal, the emancipation.  In former times the LGTB group was seen as crazy, exceptional, useless and often related to stupidity. Sadly enough, there still are citizens who define them that way, which most of the time can is because of their religion. Anyhow, equality is still a point of attention. Also togetherness is a factor, because lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people would like to feel understanding and want to be accepted in the present society. In the best case, there no longer is differentiation.

If you want to support the LGTB pride and the It Gets Better project, you can use the hashtag #BoldandBetter.  To receive the Doritos rainbow chips, your donation should be at least $10. Search for www.itgetsbetter.org to order your own rainbow chips!

Sleep care: a new investigation

What is it?

Sleep care is a new app which inspects the insomnia of people at night and tries to improve the health and quality of life. But, before this new app is available for everybody, there is an investigation. That’s why the Universitsleep carey of Utrecht, the University of Amsterdam and the Technological University of Delft invented the app sleep care. People who have had sleeplessness for at least 3 months and do have an android telephone could co-operate the investigation. The sleep care app is based on earlier therapies, so the question is if this app can be used as a substitutional product.

Why is it cool?

Presently, the society is very hectic, because everything should be going fast, easy and quick. Since the internet is an important aspect of our lifestyle, much of the work changed.  It is obvious that people need time to acclimatize this new way of living. Nevertheless, do we actually have time enough to get used to it? In my opinion, sleeplessness might have increased because of this transition.  If sleep care will be launched as a new app for everybody, it will increase the health of a lot of people on a relatively easy way. An app is way more approachable than going to sleep therapy, so therefore I’ll encourage it truthfully.  The sleep care app matches the trend internet of things, because of the improvements for citizens. A social factor of the internet of things is that it benefits the health care and it gives more clarifying information about you. Besides, the app registers specific sleep rhythms, by using the internet.

In a bigger context, sleep care can be related to long-term trends     like togetherness and being inline, and technology.  Sleep care is an innovative way to help people with sleeping problems. As the technology and online coaching improves more and more, sleep care can be cathogorized as one of the apps which is making progress in the quality of life.

Digital Nomad: yes or no?

What is a Digital Nomad?

Digital nomad is a typical ‘job’ or way of living for people who want to get rid of the 9 till 5 working patterns and for the ones who like discovering new places in the world. To become a Digital Nomad, you have to be able to comply with the requirements like freedom, having no consistency, working as productive as possible and having a huge amount of curiosity.  A digital nomad travels around the world and in every city he or she ends up, there is work to do! You need to work on a laptop or another internet device, since you always should be in connection with the company you are working for.

Why is it interesting?

This digital nomad trend is interesting, due to the fact that it is a whole other way of living than most people are accustomed to. It takes a lot of courage to decide to let all the firmness behind and just leave.  However, the positive thing about being a digital nomad is that you always got your internet device like a laptop with you.  For that reason, being a digital nomad is an example of the trend quantified self.  When you’re in a specific country, you should be able to inform others about the daily routines and the way you function in a foreign country. All this is in correlation with the integration of technology into your lifestyle.  A large amount of the digital nomads we know nowadays has their own blog. They often tell where you got to deal with every day, which beautiful places in the world you should definitely visit and about meeting new people.

digital-nomad Business-Sample

Also digital nomads belong to long-term trends like globalization and togetherness and being inline. Digital nomads travel all around the world to spot new people and places.  This was not possible if the world didn’t change slowly. The world as we know is always in connection with everybody at any time.  In former times, being on vacation in a foreign country was a big deal.  Presently, this is not imaginable anymore. Also being inline is something we cannot leave out the society.  Everywhere we look we see smartphones, laptops, iPods, iPads… it is a new way of life. Therefore, working with your laptop abroad is a clear example of how the world changes to an online one. Times are changing, and they always will.  Or will digital nomads stay a bit longer?

What do you think; would you like to be a digital nomad sometime?

Alzheimer Socks: Two designers with one mission

What is it?

Recently, the ‘’Alzheimer Socks’’ were launched. These socks are an idea from a combination of Alzheimer Nederland, Alzheimer Socks and the VUmc Alzheimercentrum. Many people in the world are struggling with Alzheimer, and that’s why a group of people wanted to think of something new. They wanted something which isn’t only cool and nice to wear, but it also has to have a deeper meaning. The socks are made different from each other, so you recognize how it’s like to have Alzheimer in real life.  I think this meaning of getting involved is awesome.

sok3sok2

Why is it cool?

Alzheimer Socks is an innovative and active way to support people with Alzheimer, what most of the time are people who are a bit older. Have you ever witnessed an Alzheimer patient being happy or pleased with his disease? I guess not. That should be a good reason to undergo the daily problems yourself. This is a good example of being together in one world. Individuals should become groups and Alzheimer patients should feel a lot of understanding and compassion.

beeld_facebook_social_media_posts_500x375

Dutch designers Mart Visser and Frans Molenaar

The social web is another trend which is very thinkable in the Alzheimer situation. Two well-known designers called Frans Molenaar and Mart Visser created two different socks separately, and combined it as a pair. This will result in a massive craziness on the internet, because this has never been made before. It is an interesting fact for me as a beginning trend watcher, that such investments like the Alzheimer Socks are becoming very cool. Now I have to question myself if this is just once or is it a beginning trend? I will keep this one in my mind!

Since 2002, much people from the baby boom generation are turning 65 years old. This is called the greying or obsolescence of the society. For that reason, having a lot of older people, automatically result in a larger amount of people who have a disease like Alzheimer.  This connection between obsolescence and disabilities is a critical known fact. That’s why it is a good thing that somebody stood up and started to do something. And this ‘’something’’ isn’t nothing!

When you became interested in supporting the Alzheimer patients, you should definitely buy a pair of these socks. You can buy these socks at Albert Heijn, V&D, C&A, http://www.debijenkorf.nl and on http://www.alzheimersocks.nl for just €6.99. You should hurry, because the selling already started!!
